Lithuanian employers seek suspension of important labour rights

Employers’ organizations, belonging to the Tripartite Council of the Republic of Lithuania, submitted their suggestions (without any previous consultations with trade unions) to suspend a part of significant workers’ rights due to the introduced quarantine in the country. The Lithuanian Trade Union Confederation (LPSK) sees it as a cynical and selfish try to shift the common burden to workers. The LPSK is strongly against it.

The first meeting of the steering committee of the Project “Improving Social Dialogue in Industry Sector in Lithuania”

On March 26, 2020, the first remote meeting of the steering committee of the Project “Improving Social Dialogue in Industry Sector in Lithuania” was held.

It was attended by Jorgen Kaurin, the Political Adviser of the United Federation of Trade Unions „Fellesforbundet“, Cathrine Ulvøy, the „Fellesforbundet“ Expert in Collective Bargaining, Dalia Jakutavičė, the Vice-Chair and Lawyer of the Lithuanian Industry Trade Union Federation (LPPSF) and the National Project Experts - prof.dr. Daiva Petrylaitė and sociologist, analyst of public institution “Enterprise Lithuania” Marius Kalanta. The discussion was moderated by Jurga Subačiūtė-Žemaitienė, the project coordinator and Vice-Chair of the LPPSF.

Project “Improving Social Dialogue in Industry Sector in Lithuania”

On December, 2019, the Project “Improving Social Dialogue in Industry Sector in Lithuania” was launched. It is carried out by the Lithuanian Industry Trade Union Federation (LPPSF), the project partner is the United Federation of Trade Unions „Fellesforbundet“ and sponsor – the „Innovation Norway“.

This project will be implemented in the industrial companies (chemical, energy, construction, utilities, aviation), whose trade unions belong to the LPPSF.

Tackling the COVID-19 outbreak in Lithuania

In Lithuania, a quarantine over the coronavirus was introduced. It should last until the end of March. The majority of shops are closed (except for food shops), companies and institutions cannot carry out economic activities as usual and various negative consequences are clear already. Recently the Government of Lithuania has decided to endorse an economic stimulus.

According to Inga Ruginienė, the chair of the Lithuanian Trade Union Confederation, the most concerning of all current issues is the vulnerability of workers – despite different tools, implemented by the Government, they are massively fired or forced to quit their jobs „voluntarily“.

Over 1 thousand participants took part in the traditonal Sports Games

On June 7-9, 2019, in the resort Šventoji near the Baltic sea, the XXIV Lithuanian Industry Workers' Federation (LITUF) Families Sports Games were held. 

More than 1000 workers from energy, public utilities, construction and chemical industry enterprises took part in this traditional event. They competed in team games (family and beach volleyball, rope pulling, log cutting, etc.) and individual competitions (darts, checkers, chess, runs, weight lifting, etc.).
