On May Day trade unions went on streets of Vilnius

This year, we celebrated May Day – International Labour Day – with a march and rally “For the freedom to defend our rights and the freedom to strike!”. Around 1,000 people from all over Lithuania took part in the event.

Trade unionists demanded simpler procedures for calling a strike. Current laws oblige workers to go through at least three negotiation procedures before they have the right to strike, which can take up to two years.

The march and rally was organised by the Lithuanian Trade Union Confederation, the Lithuanian trade union Solidarumas, the May 1st Trade Union and the Republican Joint Trade Union.

“For the freedom to defend our rights and the freedom to strike”, “People are more important than profits”, “Protesting is an exercise of freedom”, said the placards of the demonstrators.

“There is no strike that does not go for good”, “Untie our hands to defend your rights”, chanted marchers.
