On 18 November Lithuanian trade unions in contribution with local representatives from European Iniciative against TTIP and CETA have sent a letter to the members of the European Parliament with a request to support an appeal to the European Court of Justice seeking to clarify whether CETA prospective Investment Court is in line with European Union law. Trade unions also have called on MEPs to act and encourage the fulfilment of the democratic expectations on the European Parliament to scrutinize CETA.

“Mr/Ms ………,
We appeal to you, because the ongoing process related to the preparation for ratification of the European Union and Canada free trade agreement CETA appears very worrying.
We are shocked to see that the European Parliament (EP) is pursuing an extremely limited debate on CETA even though it has never released an opinion on this matter. We believe that such urgent and detailed discussion avoidance is incompatible with the EP, as the democratic control authority, function.
As far as we know, some of the MEPs have initiated an appeal to the European Court of Justice seeking to clarify whether CETA prospective Investment Court is in line with European Union law. We urge you to support this appeal.
We also call on you to act and encourage the fulfilment of the democratic expectations on the European Parliament to scrutinize CETA by requesting your committee’s involvement on the matter and the expansion of the debate.
We look forward to hear from you what steps will you take in addressing the specific concerns which CETA presents so that European Parliament has sufficient time to reflect whether this agreement meets the public interest.”
