On October 18, the 4th Congress of the Lithuanian Industry Trade Union Federation (LPPSF) took place in Kaunas.

More than 50 delegates from trade unions operating in the industrial sector reviewed the Federation’s activities over the past four years and discussed possible future directions.

The Congress delegates unanimously re-elected Dalia Jakutavičė as the LPPSF President. She had been leading the organization since 2020.

The Congress approved the chairperson’s report, the Revision Commission’s report, a new version of the Statutes, and a Letter of Expectations to the newly elected members of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania.

The Letter of Expectations notes that the delegates call on the nation’s representatives in the Seimas to:

  • Increase wages, reduce social inequality, and promote social justice.
  • Strengthen the social security system, improve the quality and accessibility of services.
  • Enhance workplace health and safety standards.
  • Promote social dialogue, emphasize the importance of collective bargaining, and increase the number of collective agreements.

“We call for the creation of a favorable legal environment to promote collective agreements, especially in the private sector, as such agreements are an integral part of a stable democratic society.

Working together, we can achieve remarkable results for the benefit of the people of Lithuania, making us proud of our country and our work for Lithuania’s future,” noted the delegates of the 4th LPPSF Congress.

Additionally, the delegates and guests of the Congress expressed their support for the Italian automotive sector workers who went on strike in Rome on October 18, as well as for the Italian public sector workers who held demonstrations on October 19. The Italian trade unions are also concerned about a new security law proposed by the far-right government and currently under consideration in the Senate, which includes restrictions on protests. It is noteworthy that the proposed law would impose limitations and criminalization even on peaceful protests, including penalties for passive resistance.

Tens of thousands of people participated in the protests in Rome.

The delegates of the 4th LPPSF Congress were greeted by colleagues from Lithuania and abroad: Inga Ruginienė, Chairwoman of the Lithuanian Trade Union Confederation, Tuscany Bell, Policy Officer of the European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU), Bjarne Jensen, Second Vice Chairman of the Danish Trade Union 3F, Lilita Vagele, Chairwoman of the Latvian Trade Union “Energija,” and her deputy, Janis Mucinieks.
